FOOD RECIPE

Tired of milking it? Here's how to make a smoothie bowl with juice

how to make a smoothie bowl

They may be the beautiful breakfasts that have taken over Instagram and Pinterest, but you don’t need to be a wellness influencer to learn how to make your own smoothie bowls at home.

Whether you’re going perfectly purple with an acai-based bowl, or throwing together a gorgeously green version with refreshing apples, cucumber and mint, these fruity bowlfuls are a way more exciting way to start the day than your standard bowl of cereal or plate of toast.

And as bone fide juice lovers, we love replacing the almond or oat milk in our smoothie bowls with one of our Eager juices. Whether that’s apple, pineapple, cranberry or pomegranate, the juice gives the bowl an even more vibrant, fruity flavour.

As a general rule of thumb, milk-based smoothies tend to be creamier, whereas juice or coconut water smoothies tend to be thinner, but can be thickened with ingredients like avocado, banana or cashews so they’re easier to tuck into with a spoon.

Top that!

The recipe for a good smoothie bowl is partly down to the smoothie base and partly down to the toppings. You can get really creative here, and remember texture is key, so it’s always worth choosing a mixture of ingredients that are juicy, creamy and crunchy. Some of our favourites include:

  • Slices of fresh fruit and whole berries
  • Seeds like pumpkin, sunflower and chia
  • Nuts including cashews, flaked almonds or pistachios to add protein
  • Added crunch from granola or cacao nibs

Check out our top three smoothie bowl recipes using juice instead of milk as a base. All recipes make one smoothie bowl and follow the same simple method – blitzing together the juice and smoothie ingredients in a blender, pouring into a bowl, then finishing with a choice of toppings.

Easy acai bowl with Eager apple juice

acai smoothie bowl image courtesy of: dinner at the zoo

We love the deep purple of this acai bowl, but this bright breakfast is not just style over substance. Acai berries have been used in food and medicine by Amazonian tribes for centuries, and are now widely considered a superfood around the world due to their high levels of antioxidants, amino acids, fibre, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.

Top with nuts, seeds, berries and shredded coconut for an even more wholesome start to your morning.

  • 120ml of Eager apple juice
  • ½ large banana sliced
  • 100g of frozen berries
  • 70g Greek yoghurt
  • ½ tbsp honey
  • ½ frozen packet of acai berry puree (50g), broken into pieces
  • Assorted toppings such as sliced almonds, berries, shredded coconut, granola, chia seeds, sliced banana, mint sprigs, etc.

Tropical fruit, Eager orange juice, and berry smoothie bowl

Any recipe that includes our fan-favourite Eager orange juice is a winner with us – and orange and banana is certainly a match made in fruity heaven.

To make this tropical delight of a smoothie bowl, we’ve blended together frozen peaches with banana and Eager orange juice until smooth, then topped with blackberries, blueberries, walnuts, chia seeds and a drizzle of honey.

  • 225g frozen peaches
  • 1 banana
  • 120ml Eager orange juice
  • Assorted toppings including blackberries, blueberries, walnuts, hemp seeds and a drizzling of honey

Mean green smoothie bowl with Eager apple juice

green smoothie bowl recipe courtesy of: taste of home

It may be green, but we’re not convinced it’s all that mean! This refreshing bowl is full of green goodness and would be great to tuck into after a workout, run or yoga session. The addition of parsley may not be to everyone’s taste, but it definitely gives a slightly more savoury, herby flavour to the bowl. Tuck in with a spoon, or use your apple slices to dip.

  • 40ml Eager apple juice
  • ½ medium green apple, chopped
  • 1/3 celery stick (with leaves), chopped
  • 75g fresh baby spinach
  • 1-2 sprigs fresh parsley, stems removed, chopped
  • 35g cucumber, peeled and chopped
  • ½ tsp minced fresh ginger or ginger paste
  • Squeeze of fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp honey

Assorted toppings including sliced or chopped cucumber, sliced or chopped apples, chopped fresh parsley and additional celery leaves.

So there you have it, juice by the bowlful – a completely refreshing way to start the day. We’d love to see your Eager smoothie bowls - tag us in your creations @eagerdrinks on Instagram 📸
