Every year, millions of people all around the world commit to reducing their landfill waste for a week during September. This year Zero Waste Week falls between 4th – 8th September, with the aim of encouraging us to make small changes that help change our rubbish habits.
At Eager, we firmly believe that less is more. That includes the amount of juice we drink and therefore the amount of packaging waste we end up with as a result.
Our juice cartons are 100% recyclable (check the details of your local kerbside collections) but we’ve also made our packaging so simple and colourful, you might even want it to hang around a little longer at home.
So if you do want to get creative for Zero Waste Week, we’ve pulled together some fun, useful and unusual ways to give your Eager carton a whole new lease of life.
Whether you’re feeling green-fingered or fancy a new way to switch off in the evenings, here are some of our favourite ways to reduce, reuse and upcycle this Zero Waste Week with Eager…
The circle of life – DIY tomato planters
Bright red, already waterproof and perfectly formed, our tomato juice carton is the perfect vessel to grow your own tomato seedlings.
Once the stalks are more established, it can also be used as a clever form of underground irrigation.
To make a DIY tomato planter, give your carton a good rinse out and cut it in half.
Fill the pot with seed compost, water well, then plant your seeds and place in a warm, sunny spot – ideally covered with a polythene or sandwich bag to create its own mini greenhouse.
In true upcycling style, here's one we made earlier - you can find lots of tips on growing tomato seedlings here on the RHS website.
For the more advanced gardener, we’re loving Huw Richards’ tip for turning used cartons into nifty underground watering systems, to help water your tomato plant deeper into the soil when they’re ready to go outside.
